This is Fleet 448’s premier event of the season. John Smith has been running our Island Hop for years. We will have anywhere from 15 to 25 boats depending on the forecast. So weather permitting, we are off to Cuttyhunk and beyond. Sometimes over to the Vineyard, sometimes up the Elizabeth Islands to Quick’s Hole or Tarpaulin Cove. Might be a 6-mile sail each way, might be 15. One group usually heads out past our first stop at Cuttyhunk, others turn back and return directly from Cuttyhunk. The itinerary will be set that morning based on current wind and weather predictions.

We try to pair up boats who are not familiar with the area with a boat that is, just in case the weather deteriorates during the day. Have a GPS or VHF radio? Bring it along. Bring something to drink and a sandwich or some snacks for the sail, extra spraysuits or gear if you have it, and probably something warm to put on when we get back to the beach. Not sure about sailing that far? You can certainly come and sail off the Gooseberry Neck beach for the day.

As always, a 448 feast on the beach when we get back. John always treats us to his “special” menu, including linguica and chourizo patties on the grill and fresh picked corn on the cob. Ok, we will have burgers and dogs too for those less adventurous types.

Directions: Take Rt 95 East, if coming from RI. Exit 10 South—Rt 88 is just past Fall River. Follow Rt 88 for about 10 miles to the end of the road. Turn right and follow road across the causeway to Gooseberry Island.
