Spring
Tune-Up Day
Spring
Tune-Up Day: This event is normally our first sailing event of
the season and takes place each year. There are not usually any
formalized activities, just everyone getting together to brush
the cobwebs off the boat and celebrate the start of a new season.
Much of the day is spent talking, putting boats together and getting
them tuned up and ready for the season. It is a great opportunity
to get done the boat tasks that may require an extra hand! Fleet
members are always willing to lend a hand or offer advice to a
fellow sailor. It’s amazing how much you can learn about
your boat just by talking to others! Everyone has their own set
of “tricks & tips” about boat set-up and tuning.
This year we are going to have the tune-up day at Megrew’s
Boats—our local Hobie dealer, located in Charlestown, RI.
A great opportunity to put your boat together right in their shop
parking lot, check on rigging, and inspect all those little parts
that just might need replacement this year. The store will be
open and any parts that are not readily available can be ordered
on the spot and shipped to your house. Should we get an exceptionally
nice day, we can go to a nearby launch area at Ninigret Pond after
lunch for a short sail. You all know how cold the water is, even
on the best day—an hour or two of sailing is about as much
as you can possibly do at this time of year. COME JOIN US on SUNDAY
June 1, 2008!
July
4 Commodore’s Fun Day
July
4 Commodore’s Fun Day: This is our annual Fourth of July
Party to celebrate the birth of our great country. It is an informal
affair that includes a large barbeque in the afternoon and watching
the fireworks go off around the bay in the evening. There are
normally groups sailing to Newport or around Jamestown as well
as just having fun off the beach. The menue for this event always
draws crowds, with past events having BBQ Steak and Ribs, Grilled
Pork Loin and Chicken, Baked Beans and all the other fixin’s.
This is a party not to be missed! Bring your family and friends
out for a great day. What better way to kick-off a long holiday
weekend. See you there.
Megrew’s
Cup
Megrew’s
Cup: Sponsored by our local Hobie dealer, Megrew’s Boats
of Charlestown, RI, this is officially our Fleet 448 Championships.
It is a few hours of racing, with the winner taking home the perpetual
trophy—the Megrew’s Cup. It’s pretty low-key,
since our 448 members are very low-key about racing. Megrew’s
Boats usually donates gift certificates for prizes, although the
biggest prize anyone can actually win is the chance to get their
name on the Cup and on the rudder that is on display at Megrew’s.
Not an easy task, since a certain Fleet member has had to find
a permanent spot in his house because the Cup is almost always
in his possession! The Cup will go to the class with the most
boats, usually the Hobie 16’s. Get out those Hobie 17’s
and 18’s for the day. It would be great to see some new
names on the Cup (sorry Mike and Barbara). RISE TO THE CHALLENGE
448 MEMBERS! July 5, 2008 at Quonset.
Island
Hop
Island
Hop: This event is one of our most popular! Normally held in mid
August from Gooseberry Beach in Westport, MA, the event starts
early in the morning with a skippers’ meeting held by our
own John Smith (yes, that is his real name, not an alias). Here
he describes the different islands of the Elizabeth Islands chain
of Buzzard’s Bay. Weather permitting, the group sails to
destinations such as Cuttyhunk Island, Martha’s Vineyard
(Menemsha), Tarpaulin Cove, Barney’s Joy or many other exciting
destinations. The fleet regroups on different beaches throughout
the day, having lunch at one of several stops. Upon returning
to the beach, the grills are fired up and another of Fleet 448’s
feasts is produced, including fresh native corn-on-the-cob and
John’s specialty—linguica and chourizo. (If you don’t
know what that is—you should most definitely come and check
it out!) COME HOP, HOP, HOPPING through the ISLANDS ON AUGUST
16, 2008.
